Family Law and Guardianship

Divorce, Child Support, & Custody

Sometimes people will decide that continuing a marriage is no longer possible.  In these times, finding the best legal counsel who will work for you and with you is imperative.

HOUCHIN LEGAL specializes in assisting clients work through the complicated process of seeking a divorce and obtaining the best results possible for each client.  Each divorce can involve the division of assets, debts, retirement accounts and many other issues.  No two divorces are the same, no matter what your friends will tell you.  Your dispute with a spouse will be different than anyone else's.  Having someone on your side who will listen and work with you can help get through this process with as little damage as possible.

In divorce matters involving children, the cases are more complicated and issues of custody, placement, visitation and child support must be addressed.  Working through these matters can be daunting if you do not have legal counsel that understands the processes and can provide realistic expectations to a client.

HOUCHIN LEGAL provides specialized support while you are going through this difficult time.

In addition to divorces and post-divorce matters, Tim has extensive experience in assisting clients through Guardianship matters.  Guardianship cases arise in two areas, guardianships of minors and guardianships of incapacitated adults.

Guardianship cases over minors can arise when parent(s) are unable or unwilling to provide proper care for children.  Someone else (frequently grandparents, family friends, etc.) can utilize the guardianship process to seek authority to provide care and support for minor children.

Additionally, there are times when a guardianship needs to be placed over an adult.  Sometimes, tragically, someone is injured or finds themselves unable to make rational decisions regarding their personal care and management of their finances.  This need for additional care can arise from injury, illness or age.  In these cases, another person may need to step up to take on the role of a Guardian.  Guardianship cases are court processes that grant individuals legal authority to care for and take action on behalf of the incapacitated adult (also called a "Ward").  Adult guardianship matters allow spouses, family or friends, to care for and make decisions for these incapacitated adults under court supervision.

HOUCHIN LEGAL has been assisting clients in obtaining and maintaining guardianships over children and adults for over 20 years.  Tim has been recognized as an expert in guardianship matters and presented Continuing Legal Education programs to other attorneys on guardianship procedures.

The initial consultation is an important step in any legal matter. It is an opportunity for you to meet with an experienced attorney, discuss your case, and get advice on how to proceed.

Here are some of the benefits of having an initial consultation:

  • Get guidance. The attorney can advise you on your legal rights and options. They can also help you understand the legal process and what to expect.

  • Get a second opinion. If you have already spoken to another lawyer, you can use the initial consultation to get a second opinion. This can be helpful if you are unsure about what to do or if you are not happy with the advice you have already received.

  • Build a relationship with a lawyer. The initial consultation is a good opportunity to build a working relationship with your attorney.

If you are facing a legal issue, schedule an initial consultation. This is a valuable first step in getting the legal help you need.
